Using Map Automation to Calculate the Impact of Flooding on Property and People
Project Dates: 2018 – ongoing
Project Description and Outcome: The State of Texas Water Development Board (TWDB), in collaboration with the Texas Natural Resources Information System (TNRIS) worked with AppGeo to build the FloodSMART (Flood System for Mapping Aggregation and Reporting for Texas) Dashboard. This is a simple proof of value application created for TWDB to demonstrate the value of building a Dashboard and Flood Inundation Viewer for statewide use before, during, and after flooding events. The application would allow public officials to plan for and understand the impacts of flooding events, with the ability to interactively view inundation at different flood levels. The application is available for viewing (URLs below), but is using sample data and is not in a production environment at this time.
AppGeo’s Performance: AppGeo continues to work with TWDB and TNRIS staff and executive leadership to determine and plan for next steps for the FloodSMART platform. This initiative is of particular interest, especially given the critical passing of Proposition 8 in the November 7, 2019 election. The passing of this proposition amended the Texas state constitution to permanently create an $800 million fund for flood preparation and mitigation. This Flood Infrastructure Fund will enable every community in Texas to be better prepared for flooding. AppGeo will continue to work with TWDB, TNRIS, and other Texas state and local agencies to ensure proper flood preparation and mitigation measures are in place.
