In 2010-2011, Applied Geographics assisted the State of Alabama to develop a geospatial strategic and business plan.  A main recommendation of the February 2011 Plan was to establish an Alabama Geographic Information Program Office (AGI/PO) to provide the State with greater authority and accountability to promote the achievement of statewide GIS goals.  In June 2011, the Governor announced the passage of legislation to establish the Alabama State Geographic Program Office and the Alabama Geographic Information Executive Council.

The project was funded through the Cooperative Assistance Program (CAP) administered by the Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC), which funds projects that support the National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI) and the objectives of the Fifty States Initiative Action Plan.  The project used the GIS Strategic and Business Planning Templates and Process Guidelines developed by AppGeo in 2006 (updated in 2009) for the National States Geographic Information Council (NSGIC) on behalf of the FGDC.
