A Foundation for GIS Strategic and Business Planning

AppGeo has been instrumental in developing FGDC Guidelines for Statewide GIS Strategic and Business Planning, also known as the Fifty State Strategic and Business Plan Guidelines. The current Guidelines provide guidance for states to develop a strategic vision and programmatic goals, promote sound business practices, increase coordination and involvement of stakeholders, evaluate Return on Investment, and avoid duplication of effort. AppGeo has a proven record of working with more than 17 states across the nation to use these templates to guide development of their geospatial infrastructure.

AppGeo developed the first set of planning Templates in 2006 for the National States Geographic Information Council (NSGIC) under contract to the Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC). In 2008-09, AppGeo led a team contracted to FGDC that updated and revised the Templates based on experience with their implementation over three years, renaming them Guidelines. These and other related documents are meant for use by all persons or entities with an interest in GIS implementation at the state level.
